An Incident
Every morning Milo and I have a two mile walk before breakfast.
But as it was raining heavily all last night and still hammering it down at 7 am I thought creeping back to bed was a more sensible option today.
So it wasn’t until half eight that a cross-legged Golden Retriever dragged me round the block to collect the paper and croissants.
There was police tape across the bottom of the road, blocking off the bus route and the Parkland Walk, part of our normal morning walk. So had we actually gone earlier, we would have been turned back.
A young PC was guarding the tape, and there was a white tent on the corner of the road. Evidently something had occurred, and the young PC was tetchy, snapping at a little old lady who had the temerity to ask what was going on.
So I asked Mr Patel in the newsagents. “I dunno. It might have been a stabbing.”
A stabbing? In bosky Stroud Green? On the corner of Lancaster Road / Stapleton Hall Road / Ferme Park Road? Surely not.
But how do I find out more?
It occurred to me that while I can find out minute details of hourly life in Helmand Province in an alien country thousands of miles away with the click of a mouse, and probably full details of President Obama’s bowel movements in Washington DC as well, I can’t get access to news that impinges more immediately on me.
Like a murder at the bottom of my road.

Hi there,
I echo that sentiment, I live near the Londis on Ferme Park Rd, what the hell happened there?
The policeman said it was a stabbing in the early hours of the morning, is anything else known?
I think I speak for most neighbours – woudl be nice to have some info form police etc!!

It was a stabbing. In the past two weeks there has been numerous incidents I know of a knifepoint holdup and a gand mugging and beating a young man. The area is rapidly descending

There’s a brief report in the Ham & High:

Thanks for pointing out the Ham & High piece, Jane. I’m in Harlech in nice and safe North Wales now, so I wouldn’t have seen it otherwise.
I would say please take care of yourselves but I don’t expect this is a random stabbing of an unknown passer-by. The victim and his assailant may have known each other, or they had an altercation which resulted in the attack. Either way, I’m not usually out and about on the streets at 4am, and even when I am I try not to get involved in a dispute.
I think you’re all pretty safe. And Dee, I don’t think the area’s rapidly descending; I’ve been here for 25 years and when I arrived it was seriously rough.

i found this page after goog-ling ‘Incident on Ferme Park Road’ , havent seen any other mention of it but i did see the tape / white tent at the junction of Lancaster Rd / Stapleton Hall rd. I have expected to see one of those “Did you see anything? “boards , but nothing.
I suspect that this isn’t a random incident , i’ve lived on Ferme Park Road for over 4 years & drug activity has increased in the last couple of years. Theres definately hard drugs being dealt in & around the area & you dont need to look too far to find it.

Our local community police officer has sent us the following statement:
“We have had many enquiries regarding the stabbing that occurred on the ward. There have been many rumours due to the level of police activity at various locations on Stapleton Hall Road. It is not being treated as gang related. A man from Waltham Forest has been charged with the attempted murder of a 39 year-old man at a flat in Stapleton Hall Road on Friday 13 November 2009. He has been remanded in custody and will be appearing at The Old Bailey in March 2010. As this is now proceeding through the courts, we are unable to provide any further details about the incident.”

So it wasn’t a murder then. Just an attempted murder. I suppose that makes me feel a little bit better.
