More Things To Worry About

Posted Friday, January 31st, 2014 at 12:14

Dutch chemist and Nobel Prize winner Paul Crutzen has listed these:

  • Human activity has transformed between a third and a half of the land surface of the planet.
  • Many of the world’s major rivers have been dammed or diverted.
  • Fertiliser plants use more nitrogen than is fixed naturally by all terrestrial ecosystems.
  • Humans use more than half of the world’s readily accessible freshwater runoff.
  • Humans have altered the composition of the atmosphere.

A colleague of Crutzen, who discovered the cause of the ozone hole, came home from the lab and told his wife, “The work is going well, but it looks like the end of the world.”
